Making the Business Case for Smoking Cessation

Site: http://www.businesscaseroi.org/roi/default.aspx

Making the Business Case allows insurance plans and employers to enter simple information into a user-friendly on-line tool (ROI calculator) to estimate cost-savings for smoking cessation programs. The calculations are based on research by Center for Health Research, Kaiser Permanente Northwest (CHR) teamed with America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) to demonstrate the economic value of smoking cessation interventions. Detailed methodology is provided on the website.

Value for employers

The claim from the research team: "Our research showed clinical interventions to reduce smoking provide a positive return on investment within 2–3 years for health plans and immediate savings for employers." Everybody wins.

Employers have the ability, through the on-line ROI calculator, to adjust the model inputs to reflect the employer's specific environmental factors and conditions.
